Breaking Free: Strategies for Dealing with Attachment and Aversion

Buddhist Psychology
Online Event
1 | Beginner

Zoom Only, October 2, 9, and 16, 2025, 7PM to 8:30 PM This experiential course draws from the authentic Tibetan Buddhist teachings of Lama Thubten Yeshe to help you recognize the subtle mechanisms of attachment and aversion that create suffering in daily life. The Core Problem Lama Yeshe likens ego and attachment to "two departments" working together in your mind. Your ego makes projections onto objects, expecting them to be permanent and completely satisfying. Your attachment follows without hesitation, getting completely stuck on these objects. The result is a constant swing between extremes: grasping acceptance of what you want and blind rejection of what you don't want. Even when you get what you think you want, the satisfaction never lasts because you're relating to your mental projections rather than reality. The Investigation Through discussion and inquiry, you'll learn to observe these mental processes in real time. Rather than suppressing or analyzing attachment intellectually, you'll use your own experience as a laboratory—examining how attachment operates in relationships, with material possessions, and even with spiritual concepts. This isn't about positive thinking or becoming detached from life. It's about seeing clearly how your mind creates unnecessary suffering and learning to respond skillfully rather […]

Dates: Thursdays, Nov. 6 - Dec. 11 Kindness is something we all recognize. Whether it’s a warm smile, a word of encouragement, or a simple gesture that reminds us we’re not alone. These small acts can lift our spirits, soften our hearts, and ease the burdens we quietly carry. They speak to something deep within us: the wish to feel seen, supported, and cared for. And just as we appreciate other people being kind to us, others appreciate it when we are kind to them. Ven. Sangye Khadro, the author of the book inspiring this course, Awakening the Kind Heart, will guide us in cultivating kindness as a way of life. Kindness isn't just something that exists in us by chance, it's a capacity we can actively nurture and strengthen. Through guided meditations, discussion, and teachings on the four immeasurable thoughts—loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity—we’ll explore how to open our hearts more fully, how to respond to ourselves and others with kindness, and how to bring more patience and compassion into everyday interactions.. Whether you’re new to Buddhist practice or simply looking for a way to reconnect with your natural capacity for goodness, this course offers a welcoming space to […]
