Embarking on the study of the lamrim entails first acquiring an understanding of the significance of these teachings and their lineage, as well as instructions on how to study and engage in the text. Additionally, the groundwork for study must be established through initially recognizing that the root of the path is reliance upon a spiritual teacher and then coming to appreciate the basis of this human existence and its value for progressing on the path to enlightenment.
