Dates: Tuesdays, Dec 2 - 23 The verb we translate as “to meditate” in Tibetan, gom, literally means “to familiarize.” First we listen to the teachings, then think about their meaning, and, finally thoroughly familiarize our mind with them in meditation, gaining direct experiential knowledge of their reality. This module introduces the student to various simple techniques, including concentration, analytical meditation, and visualization, which is a specialty of Tibetan Buddhism.

Heart Advice for Death and Dying

Heart Advice for Death and Dying

Sutra
Online Event

Most modern societies do an excellent job of hiding away the reality of death. When on top of this we lead a busy life, we may not give much thought to death until we actually encounter it face to face. We then find ourselves overwhelmed and traumatized by the diagnosis of a terminal illness or the loss of someone close to us. We may also fear that thinking about death will make it happen or else take the joy out of living. But, in reality, when we actively think about death and prepare for it, we find more peace, happiness, and fulfillment in our lives and our fear of death disappears. This course sets out Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s essential advice for the time of death and for making life meaningful. It also provides practical ways for thinking about and preparing for one’s own and others’ deaths. Students will gain confidence in facing their own death and will also be able to provide help and support to others before, during, and even after their death. This course is suitable for anyone, Buddhist or not, who is interested in learning more about death and dying from a Buddhist perspective. It consists of […]

Dates: Thursdays, Nov. 6 - Dec. 11 Kindness is something we all recognize. Whether it’s a warm smile, a word of encouragement, or a simple gesture that reminds us we’re not alone. These small acts can lift our spirits, soften our hearts, and ease the burdens we quietly carry. They speak to something deep within us: the wish to feel seen, supported, and cared for. And just as we appreciate other people being kind to us, others appreciate it when we are kind to them. Ven. Sangye Khadro, the author of the book inspiring this course, Awakening the Kind Heart, will guide us in cultivating kindness as a way of life. Kindness isn't just something that exists in us by chance, it's a capacity we can actively nurture and strengthen. Through guided meditations, discussion, and teachings on the four immeasurable thoughts—loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity—we’ll explore how to open our hearts more fully, how to respond to ourselves and others with kindness, and how to bring more patience and compassion into everyday interactions.. Whether you’re new to Buddhist practice or simply looking for a way to reconnect with your natural capacity for goodness, this course offers a welcoming space to […]
